K-Drama Review: The Penthouse (season 1)
Hera Palace is the most luxurious apartment building in the country and its residents are all powerful and rich people. However, their perfect lives are stained when a murder occurs, a crime that involves the top residents and will bring out secrets that were well hidden.
Korean drama the penthouse: war in life season 1 is a story full of twists and turns that keeps on giving and holds the viewer at the edge of their seats.
The beginning of the drama is rather slow compared to the rest. The story was also pretty basic, with the rich being arrogant, the poor struggling to survive and being pushed aside by the powerful and the kids being bullies and spoiled.
Things pick up after those episodes, when one gets to know the characters and the story starts unfolding, as the pieces of the puzzle seem to be falling into place. The mystery gets intriguing and the circumstances become more and more frustrating.
The drama, also, did a great job messing up the characters, creating villains out of nowhere and complicating things even more. In the end, nearly everyone is dislikable and annoying. In addition, the drama doesn’t hesitate to stretch things to its limits and even kill their characters.
Overall, The Penthouse season one is a good melodrama with many unpredictable twists. However, the comedy element was a bit idiotic. Soo Ryun lives at the penthouse of Hera Palace with her palace and two kids. She is not only beautiful and rich, but also sophisticated and well-behaved. She doesn’t like the fake attitudes of her peers and she opts for justice.
Lee Ji Ah nailed her character.
Seo Jin is a famous classical singer and she is an ice queen, logging to take over her father’s organization and rule their famous school. And to get what she wants, she doesn’t hesitate to do the unthinkable.
Kim So Yeon was the queen of the show and she gave a masterful performance.
Yoon Hee is a single mother who is struggling to give her daughter what she wants. She has a dark past, as she was once framed by Seo Jin when they were young and she was forced to give up her dreams of becoming a singer.
Eugene’s character was the most unpredictable and probably unlikable. She did a great job, though, slowly turning her character from victim to villain.
Dan Tae is Soo Ryun’s husband. He is a businessman who is always wants to gain more and more. He is a rulthless man who keeps the appearances.
Uhm Ki Joon gave an intense performance.
